GBA city guide

Hong Kong SAR 香港

Hong Kong connects Kiwis through rugby, working holidays, business and the New Zealand Society of Hong Kong. Central's office streets face Kowloon's harbour neighbourhoods, while Dragon's Back follows a ridge above beaches on Hong Kong Island. The Sevens at Kai Tak adds a sporting reason to stay beyond a transit or trade visit.

Hong Kong SAR in the Greater Bay Area

Hong Kong Island and Kowloon face each other across Victoria Harbour; the New Territories extend north towards the Mainland boundary. Hong Kong SAR has its own immigration and public-service systems. A stay here and an onward visit to Shenzhen are separate stages of a trip, even when joined by rail.

Choose a harbour side and neighbourhood

Central, Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun

Central combines financial and professional offices with the Airport Express terminus at Hong Kong station. Sheung Wan's older streets and Sai Ying Pun's High Street offer local shops and neighbourhood life; Pete's Place is on High Street in Sai Ying Pun. The streets climb steeply inland from the waterfront.

Wan Chai and Causeway Bay

Wan Chai is home to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Nearby Causeway Bay has shopping streets and Victoria Park. This side of the harbour suits a stay around a Wan Chai event; AsiaWorld-Expo is beside the airport, much farther away.

Kowloon and West Kowloon

West Kowloon has arts venues and the high-speed railway terminal for Mainland journeys. It can suit a stay combining culture with onward travel. When booking transport, use the full station name: Kowloon station serves the Airport Express; Hong Kong West Kowloon serves high-speed trains.

Sham Shui Po and the New Territories

Sham Shui Po has fabric shops, craft supplies and everyday food culture. Beyond the central harbour districts, Tsuen Wan, Sha Tin and Tai Po are distinct New Territories centres. Sai Kung adds a town and coastal landscape to the range of outings.

Arriving and getting around

The Airport Express links the airport with Tsing Yi, Kowloon and Hong Kong stations. The wider MTR network serves the island, Kowloon and the New Territories, while cross-boundary high-speed rail uses West Kowloon. MTR publishes journey planning and service information.

Auckland has non-stop services with Air New Zealand and Cathay Pacific; Christchurch has a published seasonal Cathay service. If continuing straight to Mainland China or Macao, decide on the transfer before passing Hong Kong immigration: SkyPier transfers and ordinary arrivals have different procedures.

Working holidays for young New Zealanders

New Zealand passport holders aged 18-30 who ordinarily reside in New Zealand may apply for Hong Kong's Working Holiday Scheme. An approved stay can be up to 12 months, with a holiday as the main purpose and temporary work allowed within the scheme's conditions. New Zealand participants may not work for the same employer for more than three months. Check the current quota, funds, insurance and application requirements before making plans.

Top Talent Pass Scheme

Some New Zealanders may qualify for Hong Kong's Top Talent Pass Scheme through its income or eligible-university graduate categories. Eligibility depends on the applicable category, qualifications, work experience and other scheme requirements; New Zealand citizenship alone does not qualify you. Check the current eligible-university list and official guidance before applying. This is a Hong Kong employment route and does not confer permission to work in Mainland China.

Places and local culture

Choose a neighbourhood walk

Central Market and the old-town streets contrast with West Kowloon's museums and waterfront. Sham Shui Po offers fabric and craft shops, while Kowloon City provides another food-focused neighbourhood outing.

Dragon's Back: ridge to beach

Dragon's Back crosses Shek O Peak in southeastern Hong Kong Island. The Tourism Board's route runs from To Tei Wan towards Big Wave Bay, with coastal views from the ridge; it is about 8 km and four hours, graded moderate. Allow a proper walking day and check weather and trail conditions before setting out.

Hong Kong Sevens at Kai Tak

New Zealand won the women's title at the 2026 Hong Kong Sevens, beating Australia 19-14 in the final. The organiser lists the next tournament at Kai Tak Stadium for 9-11 April 2027. Kiwi supporters can plan around this fixture, with the official tournament site carrying ticket announcements.

Flying Kiwis dragon boating

Flying Kiwis brings a New Zealand connection to Hong Kong dragon boating. Paddling offers a way to meet other Kiwis through a shared sport. Contact the team about current training and how to join; the New Zealand Society of Hong Kong also lists it in its guide to local Kiwi groups.

Kiwi Events Hong Kong

Kiwi Events Hong Kong connects New Zealanders and friends of New Zealand through community activities, including the Kiwi Ball, dragon boating and kapa haka performances. Its website links to the Kiwis in HK social channels for event updates.

Office meetings and regional trade

Central and Western District is an established financial, commercial and legal centre. The New Zealand-Hong Kong, China Closer Economic Partnership entered into force on 1 January 2011. It locks in duty-free access for New Zealand goods and covers services including education, business services and logistics.

Wan Chai, the airport or the container port?

The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre is on Wan Chai's waterfront. AsiaWorld-Expo is beside the airport. Allow for travel between them if your trip includes events at both. For a freight or shipping meeting, Kwai Tsing's container terminals are elsewhere again-check the meeting address before choosing a hotel.
